What is Functional Family Therapy
(FFT) is a short-term, proven intervention for tamariki/rangatahi and their whānau with who may be facing challenging times
Available to whānau of tamariki/rangatahi aged 10 – 17 who may be experiencing
- Emotional distress
- Behavioural challenges
- Family conflict or disconnection
- Risk of school exclusion or involvement with Oranga Tamariki or Youth Justice

What is Functional Family Therapy
At Te Rūnanga o Ngā Maata Waka, FFT is delivered in a way that reflects our values and commitment to Te Ao Māori. Therapy sessions are held weekly over three to five months, usually 12-14 in total, and take place in spaces that feel safe and familiar – whether here on the marae, at home, or other location the whānau choose.
Each session lasting one hour.

With a strong emphasis on respect, our therapists address emotional and behavioural challenges by encompassing and embedding Māori principles and values to meet the cultural needs of all whanau.
